Box Office Report: ‘Jumanji’ reigns again, as new releases disappoint

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle had another incredible weekend, topping the box office chart for the second week in a row, and beating every new release in the process. Only four weeks into its run, the film is less than a week away from hitting $300 million. This is a massive success, folks.

Steven Spielberg’s The Post expanded into wide release in its fourth weekend and took the #2 spot. This is very good news for the film, which had a robust per-screen average. With glowing reviews and heavy Oscar buzz, the film is not going anywhere any time soon.

At #3, The Commuter had the best weekend of the three new releases, though still a rather weak performance for a Liam Neeson action film. Perhaps the fact that this sounds like the exact plot of Non-Stop from three years ago has hurt audience interest — with ticket prices higher than ever, do people want to shell out for a film they feel like they’ve seen already? This one will probably fall off quickly.

In its second week, Insidious: The Last Key slid two spots to #4. Its 59% decline week to week is typical for horror films but suggests that this one doesn’t have huge lasting power. At #5, The Greatest Showman had another amazing weekend, with only a 14% decline. After a weak first weekend at Christmas, which would normally indicate that the film was destined to be a big flop, this thing is chugging along in a way that is astonishing. It has already earned more than its production budget in North America alone, and it’s mere days away from crossing $200 million worldwide. Star Wars: The Last Jedi, meanwhile, fell hard to #6 — it’s obviously a massive hit, but people are starting to move on now.

Paddington 2 came in at #7, a disappointingly big flop. Luckily, reviews are rapturous and it’s already made tons of money internationally, so this one still has a happy ending. But still: come on, people. Go see Paddington! Meanwhile, at #8, Proud Mary had an even weaker debut amidst pretty awful reviews. The good news is that the film’s budget was so tiny that it’s already close to earning that money back. Taraji P. Henson is insanely talented, and I love the idea of her as an action star. She just needs a good script now.

Slipping down to #9 was Pitch Perfect 3, likely taking its final bow in the Top 10, though it certainly appears that it’ll cross $100 million in the next week or two. Finally, Darkest Hour came in at #10 — though with awards buzz for star Gary Oldman, this one stands a chance of sticking around a bit longer.
