Box Office Report: ‘Jumanji’ reclaims top spot from ‘Maze Runner’, as ‘Winchester’ debuts at #3

Notes about this weekend’s numbers:

  • After being knocked off the #1 perch it had held for every weekend of the new year last week, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is back on top. Who would have thought that this movie was going to connect with audiences in such a big way? What a juggernaut! It’s now the fifth highest-grossing film of 2017, and it could very well overtake Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to claim fourth place.

  • Steep drop to #2 for Maze Runner: The Death Cure. This third installment of the YA franchise is falling off faster than either of the two previous films, but its massive international gross means that it’s already a financial success.

  • Winchester debuted at #3 with a so-so $9.25 million. Horror films tend to fall off quickly, but with the savage reviews this one has gotten, it might just fall off even quicker than most. Its debut numbers are also only 60% of what Daybreakers (the Spierig Brothers’ last non-franchise wide release) did in its first weekend. This doesn’t bode well.

  • The Greatest Showman continued to hold strong, unchanged at #4. It’s now a stone’s throw from reaching $300 million worldwide, and nowhere close to slowing down! This is the third time in the past 12 months that a big movie musical has made serious money. Might Hollywood actually learn that musicals are popular and greenlight them more often?

  • Not too much to report from the remainder of the Top 10; most films simply slipped down one spot from last week. I’m happy to see both The Shape of Water and Paddington 2 hanging in there at the very bottom.
