Box Office Report: ‘Jumanji’ wins its third weekend in a row, as wide expansions falter

Notes about this weekend’s numbers:

  • Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle continues to be an unexpected juggernaut. It has now crossed $300 million, with a worldwide total of over $750 million and counting. Astounding!

  • 12 Strong and Den of Thieves both had solid openings despite weak reviews. They’ll both probably drop off rather quickly, though.

  • The Greatest Showman remains a big steady hit. So rare for a film that seemed to fizzle with a disappointing opening of less than $9 million to hang on this long and become a major success. The musical has now crossed $100 million domestically and $200 million worldwide!

  • Paddington 2 mitigated its weak opening numbers with just a minor drop in Week 2. The sequel has rapturous reviews, and it’s now only slightly behind where its predecessor was at this point in its run. Cross your fingers that it’ll hang on, Showman-style. Go see it!

  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi crossed $600 million and is now the #6 film of all time, domestically.

  • The weekend’s nationwide expansions were all varying degrees of disappointing. Phantom Thread fared best, though unspectacularly, coming in at #12 with a solid per-screen average. I, Tonya, meanwhile, maintained a solid per-screen average but actually earned less money than last week. But the saddest story of the week is definitely the nationwide fate of Call Me by Your Name. This is a film that premiered a full year ago at Sundance, then opened in limited release in late November. Why then wait nine more weeks to expand wide? Sony Pictures Classics was clearly trying to capitalize on awards buzz for this one, but that approach backfired in a major way. The film came in at #21, as last week, with a very weak per-screen average. The buzz is gone. Hopefully, it can be rescued once this week’s Oscar nominations are announced. At this point, that’s its only hope.
